Single-origin chocolates contain cacao beans from only one country. Just as each
varietal tastes different, each country of origin produces different flavors, even when
compared to the same varietal grown in a different country. Many chocolate producers are
selling single-origin bars allowing connoisseurs to fully savor the intricacies of each bean.
Single-estate chocolate bars are even more particular in that the beans in each bar come
from only one farm in a given country. The bar may be a blended bar (meaning different
varietals in one bar) or it may include only one varietal. Soil components and other crops
grown locally give each origin or estate chocolate its singular characteristic.
Choc-Alot proudly features several single-origin chocolates. Guittard Chocolate
Company’s E. Guittard Single-Origin Tasting Kit offers 4 single-origin varietal bars. Each bar
contains 65% cacao and all variables in the chocolate making process are held constant.
Differences in taste are singularly attributable to country of origin and varietal used.
Included in each kit are four 10g tasting bars from each of four countries; Madagascar,
Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. The enclosed booklet describes the chocolate making
process, gives information on the specific cacao from each represented country, and
introduces the chocolate tasting method. A group of four can have an enchanted evening
hosting a private gourmet chocolate tasting.
New to Choc-Alot are other single-origin chocolates. Dagoba Organic Chocolate
features a Fair Trade Certified Peruvian 68% cacao bar in a 9g tasting size as well as a 68%
cacao Costa Rican single-bar with Trinitario beans. Spanish chocolatier ChocoVic presents
a 5g 71% Trinitario cacao tasting square from Grenada.
